Thinking about changing your trade union membership?

Whenever you are changing to another trade union and/or unemployment fund, you must join the new union within one month from resigning in order for your unemployment fund membership to remain uninterrupted and to not lose accrued time of employment. In these situations we recommend you join the new trade union and/or unemployment fund first and authorize them to let your previous trade union know you are resigning. This protects you from losing your accrued time of employment.

Trade unions in Finland

In Finland, being a member of a trade union is a legal right and highly common. Finnish trade unions are occupation-based and Talentia Union of Professional Social Workers is the only Finnish trade union that solely represents highly educated professionals in the social work, social welfare and early education fields. The main aims of Talentia are to promote and protect the professional and wage interests of our members in the labour market as well as ensure that our members feel well at work and have the right to exercise their profession in accordance with their professional ethics.

The Finnish trade union structure is composed of three main levels: local trade unions, national federations of member local unions, and confederations which are formed by affiliated federations and trade unions. Currently there are three trade union confederations.

Talentia is an affiliate of the second-largest trade union conferedations, Akava – Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff in Finland.

Trade union membership in Finland is around 75 % of the workforce on average, which is a high figure by international standards. Collective agreements are concluded between the union federations and cover the whole of Finland. For more information, please visit the European Trade Union Institute website. The ETUI is the independent research and training centre of the European Trade Union Confederation ETUC which itself affiliates European trade unions into a single European umbrella organisation.
